Nancy M. Cappello, Ph.D.

Nancy M. Cappello, Ph.D., was diagnosed with Stage 3C breast cancer in February 2004 after receiving "normal" mammography reports for the previous 11 years. Through her tragedy, Nancy learned the limitations of mammograms for women like her who have dense breast tissue. Through her advocacy, Nancy spearheaded two bills through the CT legislature: In 2005 a bill to ensure that insurance companies cover whole breast ultrasound screening as a supplement to the mammogram for women with dense breast tissue and this past session, a bill to standardize the communication of breast density to the patient through her mammography report which will become law on October 1, 2009.

Nancy was honored with a citation from the General Assembly for "her extraordinary commitment to promoting early detection of breast cancer through her successful legislative advocacy and public awareness campaign and for the courage to transform a personal tragedy into a positive force." She is also the recipient of the Cancer Society "Angel Award". Dr. Cappello developed an "Are You Dense" brochure that informs woman about dense breast tissue. You can obtain a copy of the brochure at www.areyoudense.org. Nancy is also the founder of Are You Dense, Inc. a 501(c) (3) public charity dedicated to raising awareness about dense breast tissue for the early detection of breast cancer.
